Why a Dedicated Transformer Is Not Optional

PDLC smart film operates on AC 48/65V, not mains voltage. The transformer steps mains AC 110/220V down to AC 48/65V at 50/60 Hz for liquid crystal alignment. Output voltage is configurable and customizable to match your film model and project requirements. Direct connection to mains permanently damages the film within seconds.

An undersized transformer cannot maintain voltage under load. The film switches slowly or flickers, the transformer overheats, and switching reliability degrades over time. Always size the transformer to total film area at 3.7 W/m² plus a 20% safety margin.

All elevatoX transformers include over-voltage, over-current, overload, and short-circuit protection. Larger models (300W+) feature adjustable output voltage (AC 0–65V) for dimming control. Multi-channel models provide isolated outputs for independent zone control without additional relay hardware.

Standard Power Supplies (Single Channel)

Single isolated output, parallel-connected PDLC film. Master control — one switch controls the entire circuit, all film switches simultaneously. For single-zone spaces.

Adjustable Power Supplies (0–65V Output)

Output voltage adjustable from AC 0–65V for dimming and fine-tuning. Same single-channel, master-control topology. Control via panel and remote.

Multi-Channel Power Supplies (Zone Control)

Each channel has an isolated output on the transformer secondary side with its own relay module. Independent zone control — switch each partition separately, single-channel failure does not affect others. For multi-zone commercial spaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

Calculate total film area in square meters and multiply by 3.7 W/m² to get the ON-state power draw. Add a 20% safety margin. For example, 5 m² of PDLC film draws 18.5 W — add 20% margin for 22.2 W minimum transformer capacity. A 30W transformer covers this comfortably. Use the wiring simulator to calculate automatically.

An undersized transformer cannot maintain voltage under load. The film switches slowly or flickers between states, the transformer overheats, and the switching reliability degrades over time. Always size the transformer to total film area plus a 20% margin. Oversizing is safe — it simply costs more.

Yes, with a multi-zone controller. The transformer feeds the controller, which switches power to individual zones independently. The transformer must be sized to the sum of all zone areas, even though only some zones may be active simultaneously. This is the standard configuration for open-plan offices with multiple meeting rooms.

Yes. SPD film requires 90V AC, not the 48–65V AC used by PDLC. SPD transformers have different winding ratios and cannot be interchanged with PDLC transformers. Using the wrong voltage will damage the film.

Install the transformer in a dry, ventilated location away from direct moisture. For bathroom applications, mount it outside the bathroom or in a waterproof enclosure. For office installations, above the ceiling or in a service closet is common. Never expose the transformer to water spray or condensation.
