How Each Technology Works

PDLC sandwiches microscopic liquid crystal droplets in a polymer matrix between two PET/ITO conductive layers. OFF: droplets orient randomly, scattering light (frosted). ON: 48/65V AC aligns the LC molecules along the field, matching the polymer refractive index — light passes through (clear). The transition is binary and completes in ≤ 60 ms.

SPD uses suspended microscopic particles in a fluid layer between conductive substrates. OFF: particles scatter randomly (deep tint, ≤ 2% VLT). ON: 90V AC aligns particles into columns, allowing light through (≥ 60% VLT). Voltage is adjustable 70–110V for continuous dimming across a 30:1 range. Transition OFF→ON ≤ 1 s, ON→OFF ≤ 9 s.

Electrochromic glass uses ion intercalation — an applied voltage drives lithium ions into or out of a tungsten oxide layer, changing its oxidation state and tint. The redox reaction is slow (seconds to minutes) but requires only a low holding voltage at steady state. Installation is factory-laminated only with complex integration.

PDLC operates on 48/65V AC at 3.7 W/m² in the transparent state. SPD operates on 90V AC (70–110V adjustable) at 3 W/m² transparent and 0 W opaque. Electrochromic has low steady-state power but requires a higher initial drive during the transition. All three require dedicated transformers — never connect directly to mains voltage.

PDLC self-adhesive film applies directly to existing glass via dry-install adhesive — the most retrofit-friendly option. SPD adhesive-type film (0.57 mm) also supports retrofit installation at 15–25°C with humidity below 70%. SPD laminated and electrochromic require factory lamination with autoclave processing, making them new-build or major renovation products only.
